Turnaround Support

Project length

This particular role would begin as soon as possible (preferably before the end of June) and last between 3 and 5 months, depending on your availability.

Role description

A business professional with experience of turnaround or supporting companies in distress is required to support our partner organisation in Mexico. The company deals in biodegradable cleaning products.

You’d be involved in helping staff with the hiring of a new CEO and in helping the organisation to review and improve its management and operating techniques.

Requirements

  • Previous experience in turnarounds and supporting distressed companies to recover is required
  • Previous experience in an interim role as Director/CEO might be beneficial
  • Strong HR and people management skills, including mediation
  • Previous experience in Mexico or in dealing with cleaning products would be a bonus
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Self motivated with the ability to work independently
  • Professional, flexible, resourceful, adaptable, creative and culturally sensitive

Although this is an unpaid role, your flights, accommodation, visa costs, medical expenses and a daily stipend will be provided – making this an ideal opportunity for an experienced professionals to use their skills in a new and exciting environment.

Financial Management Support

In the last couple of months we’ve noticed an increase in the number of organisations approaching us for assistance with Financial Management. With this in mind, we’d be delighted to hear from professionals with experience in this area that’d be willing to share their skills with small and medium enterprises in low and middle-income countries.

Project length

Approximately 3 to 4 months beginning in June (but this will vary from placement to placement). We are also keen to hear from volunteers who’d be willing to provide remote support, perhaps 10 hours per month via email and Skype.

Job description

Each role will be specific to the organisation but, in general, our Associates will:

  • Support SMEs to improve their management reporting systems
  • Provide advice on pricing strategy and policy
  • Deliver a training programme for staff on financial management

  • Work with the staff to increase their capability and capacity

Requirements

  • Understanding of finance and accounting, up to and including CFO level
  • Experience of accounting, audit and financial reporting
  • Experience setting and devising objectives, strategies and task
  • Experience of providing training
  • Analytical skills with policy development and operational procedure development abilities
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience with donors /fund-raising, or commercial experience working with profit-driven companies would be very desirable

Business Mentors

Job description

We have a variety of upcoming positions to deliver strategic and organisational development inputs in order to help us grow inclusive businesses. We’d be particularly interested to hear from individuals with experience in the agricultural and clean energy sectors.

Each role is specific to the organisation but, in general, our Associates will:

  • Provide overall business advisory services, support and training to the organisation in order to improve business plan and implementation
  • Carry out a general diagnostic of the organisation, with the view of identifying existing and missing business functions and procedures
  • Assist the organisation to identify new potential channels to markets / products / suppliers or to improve access and delivery of existing ones
  • Help the organisation improve internal management systems including financial reporting, recording of sales channels and opportunities, suppliers etc.

Retail Consultants x 2

Project length

Both roles will last approximately 3 months, based in and around Nairobi and its outskirts.  We hope the roles will begin in early 2014

Organisation summary

Our partner is a Kenyan organisation working with agrodealers in rural areas to improve their business processes and customer management practices. Our partner has facilitated partnerships between these agrodealers and small ICT firms, and some have already begun using technology to their advantage.

Job description

We are currently recruiting two volunteers to support this organisation.  

The first role is a general retail consultancy role which will involve working closely with agrodealers, mentoring them in:

  • basics of merchandising, inventory, and financial management
  • development of customer loyalty programs
  • improvement of promotional and marketing campaign and tactics, including how to assess marketing and promotional investments
  • how to use management information more effectively for strategic planning and decision making.

The second role is more closely tied to aftersales and, if possible, some previous experience in ICT.  It will involve working with both the ICT firms and the users to illustrate the importance of (and value in) following up with customers after initial implementation. The successful volunteer will also have the skills and knowledge to help the ICT firms package their products more effectively.

Requirements

• Previous experience of providing retail consultancy is necessary
• The knowledge, initiative and confidence to work with markets that aren’t always ready for ICT would be beneficial for the second assignment
• Excellent communication skills
• Previous experience of training and mentoring others
• Previous experience of working in low-income countries is desirable but not essential

These would be ideal opportunities for experienced professionals to use their skills in a new and exciting environment, as although unpaid we will cover your expenses. We provide return flights, insurance, in-country accommodation, transport and inoculations. You will also receive a daily stipend for meals and subsistence.

 

 

Renewable Energy Advisors

Project length

Between 3 and 6 months, beginning as soon as possible

Organisation summary

Our partner organisation is a technical trade school in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, which offers training, certification and work experience in mechanics, construction and computer science. The school is currently looking for assistance from an individual or small team to help them develop a new solar energy training programme.

Job description

The school is aiming to provide young Haitians with a 10-12 month course in solar energy. The coursework will be divided into modules and complimented by opportunities for students to put their newly-acquired skills into practice. It is hoped that the training on offer will expand to encompass wind, hydro and waste to energy in the future. The role will involve designing a curriculum, assessing the space and designing new labs, setting-up the necessary materials/equipment, and training permanent staff to teach courses.

Requirements

  • At least 3-5 years experience working in the renewable energy sector
  • Experience teaching or training at college/university level
  • Experience developing teaching materials and curricula
  • Experience designing, overseeing and implementing a renewable energy program
  • Experience of working in developing countries
  • Strong spoken and written French skills are required
  • Familiarity with the challenges and opportunities of working with solar technology in the Caribbean would be an advantage

Please note that this is an unpaid voluntary role, however expenses such as flights and accommodation will be covered by us and our partner organisation. Volunteers will also receive a daily living allowance to cover the cost of food etc.

This sort of trade is core to development of the private sector in Developing countries and we’re keen to hear from anyone with experience in these areas.
