Meet the team: Team Kigali

Welcome to our new cohort of Challenges Worldwide International Citizen Service volunteers, or more formally our new team of “Business Support Associates”.  Over the upcoming three months, they will be learning Professional Consulting with Challenges Worldwide and using their new skillset to give support to SME’s across Kigali, Rwanda

Eleanor Knight 

Age: 21

From: Redwarth Bay, Anglesey, North Wales

What were you doing before the programme? 

Studying accounting and finance, freestyle captain of the snow society, finance assistant for the student unions and strategy partner for York community consulting.

What enterprise are you working with as a business support associate?

Ingabo Plant Health

Who is your work counterpart? 

Steven

What are your hopes for the placement?

To make a lasting positive social impact and have personal development through creating good friends and amazing memories.

Fun fact 

“I was once kicked out of the silent zone in the library for causing a commotion at 2 am, dressed as a yellow power ranger”

 

Steven Mbanza

Age: 20

What were you doing before the placement?

I was studying Medicine Courses at the University of Rwanda at Butare Campus.

What enterprise are you working with as a business support associate?

Ingabo Plant Health

Who is your work counterpart?

What are your hopes for the placement?

I hope to gain entrepreneurship, communication, and networking skills.

Zoe Fillingham

What were you doing before the programme? 

2nd Year Politics student at the University of Edinburgh

What enterprise are you working with as a Business Support Associate?

Water Access Rwanda

Who is your work counterpart?

Bonaventure 

What are your hopes for the placement?

Hopes to give her CEO “an idea she would have never thought of before.”

What were you doing before the programme?

Studying at University of Rwanda, College of health and Sciences; Co-Founder of TANTINE Group Ltd; Volunteering in Medical Student Association of Rwanda; Founder of HEART OF READERS and FH-Rwanda.

What enterprise are you working with as a Business Support Associate?

Water Access Rwanda

Who is your work counterpart?

Zoe

What are your hopes for the placement?

Hope to learn from each other, gaining skills about management and creation of businesses. Getting new friends and helping my enterprise to grow up.

I can speak more than 4 languages.

What were you doing before the programme? 

2nd Year Politics and Modern History student at the University of Manchester.

What are your hopes for the placement?

I hope to feel immensely proud of the accomplishments of myself, my business and all of my counterparts.

What were you doing before the placement?

Studying at university of Rwanda, College of Business and Economy, and volunteering in a Local NGO which uses media to promote the culture of peace.

What enterprise are you working with as a Business Support Associate?

What are your hopes for the placement?

Hope to upgrade my capacity, my public speaking skills as well as learning much that will help me throughout my career.

I speak 4 languages (although only two of those perfectly!)

I have been doing network marketing and bar modelling.

I hope to gain personal development.

To gain work experience and entrepreneurial skills

What were you doing before the placement?

I was studying Business in Communication at Southern New Hampshire through Kepler Program.

What enterprise are you working with as a Business Support Associate:

What are your hopes for the placement?

I hope to enhance entrepreneurship, communication, and networking skills.

Fun Fact:

When I put on the headsets and start singing hoping I am the best as people around me are laughing the voice.

 

Michael Owen Jones

From: Barking, London

What were you doing before the placement?

I was studying at NewVIC Sixth Form College for Mathematics, Further Mathematics, and Computer Sciences A-level.

What enterprise are you working with as a Business Support Associate:

Gloria

What are your hopes for the placement?

To gain employability skills and work experience.

Fun Fact:

I have never had a girlfriend.

 

Pascaline Mfuranzima

Age: 23

From: Kigali, Kicukiro

What were you doing before the placement?

Before joining the programme I was studying at Kenyatta University in Kenya, in my second year Environmental Health.

What enterprise are you working with as a Business Support Associate:

What are your hopes for the placement?

To help my entreprise grow and achieve its goals/mission.

What were you doing before the placement?

I was preparing for my college exams and working at Gatwick Airport

What are your hopes for the placement?

I want to make a change to my enterprise, build good relationships with other volunteers and do the CMI.

Fun fact: 

Once I was watching Superman TV show and suddenly felt like I was Superman. His powers run into my veins, I got on the table and jumped to the chair in front. But because I wasn’t Superman at all, I missed it and broke my leg.

I was studying in my third year at Kepler university

Help my Enterprise to grow and gain more skills in business

Fun Fact

When I was in high school in my year 1, I was in a relationship with a guy, both of us was too shy and we spent the whole year communication via small letters. We couldn’t talk to each other face to face.

What are your hopes for the placement?

To gain more business and management related skills, gaining experience from a  practical placement.

What were you doing before the placement?

Before joining the programme I was a final year student at the University of Rwanda, college of science and technology in Civil Engineering.

What are your hopes for the placement?

Gaining new skills in business consultancy and work experience

When I was back in college, I used to participate in different activities of student organizations and my classmate ended up by giving me a nickname of “ GLOBAL LEADER

Age: 20

From: Milton Keynes, UK

What were you doing before the placement?

I had unofficially dropped out of university,  still living campus life whilst working on my idea for next year.

What enterprise are you working with as a Business Support Associate?

What are your hopes for the placement?

To have fun and gain a qualification.

Fun fact: I hold the drift king trophy in my school’s trophy cabinet

 

Joanna Gillan 

Age: 21

What were you doing before placement?

Studying Advertising and PR at the City of Glasgow College. Head representative for my class. Ambassador for the business department and working at Vodafone.

What enterprise are you working with as a business support associate?

Wood Habitat (interior design enterprise)

Who is your work counterpart?

Liza

What are your hopes for the placement?

Learn new business skills and analysing a business, making new friends and dive into the Rwandan culture.

Fun fact: 

I used to eat tomato sauce sandwiches when I was young (ew) and my dad has been on bargain hunt.

What were you doing before the programme? 

Student at the southern New Hampshire University through Kepler programme.

What are your hopes for the placement? 

Cultural socialising within a practical experience in the workplace. Making an impact in the programme and society at large.

What were you doing before the placement?

Studying law at university in London and working in recruitment.

What enterprise are you working with as a Business Support Associate?

What are your hopes for the placement?

To gain a CMI qualification and come home unscathed.

Fun fact: 

I’ve skydived from 15000 ft!

 

Mugisha Come Emmanuel

What were you doing before the placement?

I was enjoying the summer holidays after my college exams

What were you doing before the placement?

What are your hopes for the placement?

To experience a different culture

I love dark chocolate and will go to some lengths to find it

What were you doing before the placement?

I was studying full time

What are your hopes for the placement?

I want to increase my entrepreneurship skills and my employability rate.

Fun fact: 

I have always got unexpected luck since I was born

 

Jonas Munsabire

Age: 26

From: Nyagatare District, Eastern Province

What were you doing before the placement?

Working as careers development facilitator at an international NGO called Indego.

What are your hopes for the placement?

Opportunity to do CMI and gaining more skills in leadership and management. I hope to expand my experience to get a better job in the future!

Fun fact: Once, I walked back and forth from my friend’s house to my house until 4 am because we had so much to talk about!

 

Alec Edgecliffe Johnson

Age: 23

From: Edinburgh UK / Philadelphia US

What were you doing before the programme? 

President of the Edinburgh University Students’ Association

What are your hopes for the placement?

Develop friendships and bonds with all members of the team and connect with as much of the Rwandan society, culture and way of life as possible. Engage deeply with the businesses we’re consulting and deliver lasting value to these organisations.

Fun fact

In high-school, I competed in robotics competitions!

 

Rosie Coleman

Age: 25

Location: Cambridge, UK

What were you doing before the programme? 

I was a volunteer Business Support Associate with Challenges Worldwide in Kumasi, Ghana. Before that, I was Head of Marketing for a technology incubator in London.

What are your hopes for the placement?

I hope to continue falling in love with Rwandan culture and the country’s incredible spirit of entrepreneurship. I also hope to improve my management and leadership skills by supporting a team of 22 people!

Fun fact:

Earlier this year I travelled from Cape Town to Nairobi in a big overland truck. My trek took 50 days, crossed eight African countries and covered 12000km!

 

Ritha Tunda

What were you doing before the programme? 

Student studying bachelor of commerce in finance at Nairobi University at Kigali campus

What do you hope to gain from the programme: 

Experience of the workplace and practical understanding of business by supporting

Fun fact: When I’m at my mum’s house, sometimes I milk the cows. Just for fun!
