Welcome to our new cohort of Challenges Worldwide International Citizen Service volunteers, or more formally our new team of “Business Support Associates”.  Over the following 3 months, they will be learning Professional Consulting with Challenges Worldwide and using their new skill set to give support to SME’s across Kampala, Uganda. Hopes for the placement: I hope to advance professionally by learning the basics of business consulting and improving my analytical skills. I want to develop personally with my confidence and public speaking abilities. I hope that this programme shows me that I am capable of living and working in a new environment and can adapt to a different culture, making loads of friends along the way!

Before the programme: I have recently completed a Bachelor’s degree in human resource management and awaiting graduation in January 2018. I was working with Mr. Gift Uganda (a gift delivery company) as a marketing manager before the program as well as working on the water project that I am planning to start after completion of the program. I have also worked with compassion international as an intern where I carried out several activities.

Hopes for the placement: By the end of the programme I am hoping to be able to have good presentation skills as well as analytical skill, computer skills, communication skill among others. I am not only looking at gaining skills but also get connections to the businessmen and the players in the business world, so as to be able to get and acquire more sustainable knowledge in the growth of business and jobs. Great thanks to the organisers of the program and the coordinators for the opportunity they offered me to participate in the worldwide challenges program.

Before the programme: I have a running business dealing with innovative marketing, personal development and graphics design. Although this year things have been tough so joining the programme was like my time off.

Hopes for the placement: I hope to create life-long friendships hence widen my network. I also hope to use my special skills of bringing new life to things I find dead and stagnant to revive the business we were given.

Fun fact: ..none…………… may be the fact that I have no respect for the status quo.

I hate systems, educational, political and organised religion. Am basically a confused mixture between an adult and child.

Before the programme: I was at Sixth Form studying music technology, drama and media. Then started working full time at the Orchard Tea Gardens.

Hopes for the placement: For myself, I hope to simply see a positive impact that I have made, although that is very vague. In regards to others, I hope to perhaps see change in them that I have assisted with because that’s why we’re all here; for change.

Fun fact: I look like an non athletic fusion of Conor McGregor and Wayne Rooney according to my colleagues here in Uganda.

Before the programme: I was doing an apprentice for outdoor activity leader where I would be a group leader, teach and run over 30+ different types of sessions for participants 7 to 18+ ranging from different activities such as Archery, fire lighting, high ropes.

Hopes for the placement: I learn about a completely different culture, to understand how others live in a day to day life. To understand and learn about the inside of a start-up business and learn the knowledge within that and to also just have fun, experience new things, meet new people and create memories.

Fun fact: I recently played GTA with James Buckley (Jay from Inbetweeners) & I was also born in my living room on a Teletubbies mat.

Hopes for the placement: I hope to gain a business consulting experience to be sought by other enterprises including implementation in my organisation, insight on the cross culture work aspects; while hopeful my advice and support can also professionally build the volunteers around me and Challenges Worldwide- ICS program as a whole.

Fun fact: I thought the mouth of an open tranquil crocodile is innocent!
