International Volunteering For Young Scots Focus Group @ Glasgow City College

International Citizen Service (ICS) is a UK Government funded international volunteering programme for 18 – 25-year-olds that takes part in over 20 countries around the world.
Edinburgh based charity Challenges Worldwide have been running an ICS programme since 2014 and the UK Government has tasked us with supporting as many young Scottish people as possible to take part in our programmes overseas.

We would like to run a focus group with approximately 10 young people each are aged 18-25 who have not taken part in an International Citizen Service (ICS) programme.
If you fit the above criteria, then we would love to talk to you about how we can make international volunteering more accessible to young people across Scotland.
The focus group will last 2 hours and you will receive a £10 Amazon voucher as a thank you for your time!

International Citizen Service (ICS) is a UK Government funded international volunteering programme for 18 – 25-year-olds that takes part in over 20 countries around the world.

Edinburgh based charity Challenges Worldwide have been running an ICS programme since 2014 and the UK Government has tasked us with supporting as many young Scottish people as possible to take part in our programmes overseas.

We would like to run a focus group with approximately 10 young people each are aged 18-25 and a UK Citizen and meet at least two of the following criteria:

You left education at 16
You received free school meals while at school
You attended a secondary school that falls within POLAR Classifications 1 or 2
You have a household income <£20,000 per annum
You are in receipt of benefits

If you fit the above criteria, then we would love to talk to you about how we can make international volunteering more accessible to young people across Scotland.

The focus group will last 2 hours and you will receive a £10 Amazon voucher as a thank you for your time!

How can an International Citizen Service (ICS) placement help your career?

Challenges Worldwide and The Edinburgh University History Society are proud to invite you to a panel discussion on International Citizen Service, a youth volunteer programme funded by the UK Government.

This information session is aimed at highlighting how its various delivery partners can aid your route into gainful employment. This discussion, chaired by Challenges Worldwide, will provide an overview of economic development and the role young people can play through ICS programmes in developing countries.

We will also hear from our professional guest speaker for the night, Julia Brown who has worked in a variety of healthcare businesses before starting her own service-based business that she ran for 8 years. She then moved into economic development and is a currently a Senior Director with Scottish Enterprise and is involved in helping a variety of businesses in Scotland to grow.

By attending this event, you will learn how involvement in International Citizen Service programmes can be useful in increasing experience, and employability prospects of young students and graduates.

An increasingly globalised world needs companies to have a workforce with an international outlook.

Challenges Worldwide as a wealth of experience in helping businesses, with one successful method being the placement of young people into a business overseas.

Currently working across Sub – Saharan Africa, these young professionals return to the UK with international, hands-on and capacity building experience that has allowed them to become effective employees in their respective fields.

Working in partnership with SDI and Scotgrad, Challenges Worldwide helps to internationalise businesses with these young professionals who have first-hand experience in international business environments.

Ryan Pugh joins us to talk about his experience of a 12-week placement in Zambia through Challenges Worldwide and International Citizen Service (ICS), the difference he made to the business, as well as some unexpected additional benefits to the local community.

Scotgrad helps businesses grow through graduate staff who are part-funded by the Scottish Government.

Challenges Worldwide has particularly extensive experience in Ghana and with the Chamber and SDI’s growing relationship with multiple Ghanaian businesses and governmental bodies, now is the time to become involved.

ICS Selector Training London

The role of an ICS selector/ assessor is vital to the volunteer assessment process. Selectors will assess the suitability of applicants against the ICS selection criteria through structured one-to-one interviews and observing group activities. This is a great opportunity to engage with the leading international volunteering programme in the UK and to support young people at the beginning of their Challenges Worldwide ICS journey.

Assessment days generally run from 9.30am – 6pm, and can be full on and tiring days, therefore we require selectors to have stamina, flexibility, and enthusiasm. Selectors will be able to utilise skills and information gained through previous voluntary experiences, and have an opportunity to build strong assessment and facilitation skills.

We will reimburse travel expenses up to £50.

Pre-departure Training for Volunteers (Closed Event)

Pre-departure training weekend for our ICS volunteers due to travel to Ghana, Uganda and Zambia in June.

This is a closed training event for our volunteers who have previously been selected to be part of the Challenges Worldwide ICS team to work in Ghana, Uganda or Zambia over the summer.
